Charlotte Strikes Early, Blanks G-Braves 3-0

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – Jerry Sands homered and finished a triple shy of the cycle and Kevan Smith knocked in two runs as the Charlotte Knights (47-64) scored early to beat the Gwinnett Braves (50-60) 3-0 on Tuesday night at Coolray Field.

Sands led off the second inning with a solo home run and also singled and doubled, finishing 3-for-4. Smith singled in runs in the first and third innings against G-Braves’ starter Matt Wisler (L, 0-1) as the Knights built a 3-0 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Anthony Ranaudo (W, 6-3) held Gwinnett to just five singles over 7.0 scoreless innings while striking out six and walking none. The G-Braves managed to put two runners on base in the same inning only once, in the second, but Ranaudo wiggled out of the jam by getting a pop-out and a fielder’s choice.

Chris Beck (H, 4) and Brad Goldberg (S, 7) closed it out for Charlotte, going the final 2.0 innings and retiring all six batters they faced.

After allowing three runs over the first three innings, Wisler settled down, holding Charlotte to two singles over his final five innings in his first start since being sent down by Atlanta on July 29. He finished with six strikeouts and seven hits allowed over 8.0 total innings, while throwing 69 of his 100 pitches for strikes.

Kanekoa Texeira allowed two hits and a walk, but didn’t yield a run in the ninth for the G-Braves. Ronnier Mustelier was the only G-Brave to reach third base on the night, as he finished 2-for-4 with two singles.

Jake Peter went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base for Charlotte.

The G-Braves and Knights continue the four-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Rob Whalen (0-1, 1.93) is scheduled to start for the G-Braves against righty Terance Marin (4-5, 6.18) for Charlotte. Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM at 6:35 p.m.
